Pots galore at Putney Town Regatta 2017

Saturday 13 May was Putney Town Regatta, always a fun event for Thames with races right in front of the boathouse. The club had a good entry this year and came out with wins in four events.

Fresh off winning Nov 1x at Borne at Chiswick last week, Philip went out to add to his sculling points with a solid IM3 1x win, defeating the Claires Court sculler who beat him at Hammersmith Bridge in the first round and following up with a 2.5 length win over a Sons of the Thames sculler in the final.

The masters F quad of Mark, Claude, Paul and Kevin had a three-way final against an F quad from Mortlake and a D quad from Vesta. They pulled out a quick lead over Mortlake which was enough to secure a good victory over Vesta, despite our neighbours’ relative youth!

The women’s IM3 4+ had two rounds to get through. In the first race they dispatched crews from LYR Thames Tradesmen and Twickenham with ease, and in the final beat Putney Town by an even greater margin. It was the first-ever win for strokesiders Lucy and Louisa and a second win for bowsiders Anna and Laura and cox Charlotte, following their WNov 4+ win at Hammersmith Regatta.

The men’s IM3 4+ was also drawn from the novice squad. They had a solid first round against crews from Corpus Christi, Oxford and Vesta and ended up racing Corpus’ first boat in the final. This was a closer race but Thames held their cool to take the win – a great pot for Tom, Ed, Jon and Joel, coxed by Ricardo.

The women’s novices raced an 8, winning their first race against Emmanuel School comfortably and pulling back a deficit off the start in the second race against Godolphin & Latymer only to lose by a canvas at the finish. Godolphin went on to beat Vesta in the final by a much bigger margin.

The men’s masters also fielded an 8 which had to race IM2 against a crew half their age, and acquitted themselves well.
