Thames RC Win 6 Trophies at Wallingford‏

Thames Rowing Club departed at ‘stupid-o’clock’ on Sunday morning for Wallingford Regatta. Luckily the sun was out and the wind a light cross wind all day and some 14 hours after the trailer arrived, it left again, with a haul of 6 wins and several 2nd places (to our own crews!).

The Men’s 1st and 2nd 8 finished 1st and 2nd in the ‘Challenge event’, beating the best schoolboy crews. Half the first eight then went on to win the Coxed fours in the afternoon and the other half finished 2nd to a strong Upper Thames Coxless four. Half the second eight managed a pleasing 4th place in the Coxed Fours after zero outings. The real result of the Men’s side however was the 3rd 8 which proved their 37th at this slightly peculiar Head of the River was no fluke when they held off strong challenges from Leander’s Thames Cup 8 and Magdalen College, Oxford, to win the ‘Club’ Trophy, giving us a clean sweep of the Men’s 8’s events. The ‘Colonial’ Pair of Hoff and Nick P won Elite Pairs proving that they ‘still have it’!

Not to be outdone, the women also won their fair share of silverware, notably finishing 1st and 2nd in the ‘Club’ even for the Women’s Eights and winning the Women’s Senior 4’s while also finishing 2nd and 4th in a great race. Jumping into an 8, two of these fours just lost to a very fast Headington School combo, giving it all away in the first 250m before moving back on them in the body of the course..

A very pleasing day and a great way to start the season but mentions must go to those crews that really stepped up and surprised themselves, the coaches, and above all the opposition – the Men’s 2nd and 3rd 8’s and the Women’s Club 2nd 8 who fought tooth and nail to secure their 2nd place by a few feet.

Well raced all.

Next up is Bedford and Ghent.
