Thank you, Tom Mapp

Thames Rowing Club is sorry to say goodbye to women’s head coach Tom Mapp, who is leaving to take up a position at Leander Club after four years in Putney.

Tom first joined Thames as a volunteer coach in 2019/20, but was appointed as women’s coach for the 2021/22 season. He led the squad to three consecutive victories in the Wargrave Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta (2022, 2023, 2024) and to the inaugural win in the Bridge Challenge Plate in 2025. In the same period, Thames has won the Copas Cup for club eights at Henley Women’s Regatta four years in a row, adding the Lester Trophy for club coxless fours in 2025.

Under Tom’s leadership, the women’s squad have also picked up a number of pennants at the Women’s Head of the River Race, including second place in 2025 when the top five eights all finished within the top 20 crews.

Head coach Sander Smulders will be leading the women’s squad this season, supported by the experienced team of volunteer coaches who have all played a key role in recent successes. We look forward to continuing to build in the 2025/26 and to profit from the strong legacy which Tom leaves behind.

Thames captain Tom Foad said: “While we’re sad to see him go, the new role at Leander is a fantastic opportunity for Tom and we’re incredibly proud of him.”
