Winter racing round-up
Thames Rowing Club had a successful winter racing season, picking up pennants at many of the big Head races on the Tideway. The club also recorded successes in match racing and fixtures.
Scullers Head
At Scullers Head in September four scullers came away with category wins: James Beattie (open senior), Ben Trotman (open novice), Hope Cessford (women’s club) and Isabella Cassidy (women’s novice).
Fours Head
A total of 11 crews raced Fours Head, with our open club 4- coming away with the pennant and the open championship and club 4+s finishing third. The other results were encouraging against stiff competition.
Remenham Challenge
Thames won the Victor Ludorum at the Remenham Challenge just before Christmas, taking wins in both open and women’s championship 8+s in addition to strong showings in the club categories.
Women’s Eights Head of the River Race
WEHORR in March was an outstanding showing from the Thames women, with three crews in the top 10 including the senior pennant winners, Thames C, and five crews in the top 30 once more.
Heineken Roievierkamp
The Thames men travelled to Amsterdam on the same weekend as WEHORR, winning MG8+ and putting out strong performances against the Dutch national team and Oxford University in the elite category.
Boustead Cup and Rayner Cup
The annual grudge match against London RC produced six exciting races. On the women’s side Thames took the Rayner Cup as well as the race for second 8s and quads. The Boustead Cup went to London by around 2.5 lengths and London also claimed the win in a thrilling second 8s race by half a length. Thames won the third 8s contest.
Head of the River Race
There were no pennants at HORR for Thames this year, but like the women, the club put five eights into the top 30 and Thames A finished a very solid fourth to wrap up the winter season.
